WHAT a DAY !
Zachary James Hidalgo ran his first USAC Quarter Midget race at the Orange Show in southern California. In only his fourth time in the car, Zachary finished second in his heat race but was disqualified after a last minute wheel/tire change put him 5 pounds under the minimum weight, relegating him to start at the back of the field in the main event. All alone in the fourth row, Zachary methodically picked off the field of 5 to 9 year olds making passes on the outside and inside, at one point brushing the wall. After taking the lead Zachary began lapping the field, including the pole sitter, who abruptly pinched Zach from behind spinning him around bringing out the second caution of the 35 lap main. On the restart, with three laps to go, Zachary drew clear posting his first win out of as many starts. What a day!
